Hide-and-seek

You liked me once. What happened, honey,
that you then started to detest me?
What horrible a thing have I done
that you now despise me so much, man?
And, tell me, how can I revert it?
Can’t you warm up to me just one bit
and treat me like everybody else?
There’s no need for you to be so tense.

And it’s outright absurd that you stoop
to hiding behind a chicken coop
when you chance to see me passing by.
Sure, it’s not because you’d be so shy.
But aren’t you too old to play such
rooted-in-grudge-so-childishly-much
games like hide-and-seek? Just a baby
could think that when he doesn’t see me,
I cannot see him. Oft I still do.
I much cherish every glimpse of you.
Whether I seek you or not, hiding
is really pointless, notwithstanding.

You’re the friendliest person that I know,
but I’m the only one whom you show
so much wholly needless resentment.
Why deserve I this special treatment?
Or do you ban and avoid in fear
every girl that ever found you dear
and fell so madly in love with you,
but you didn’t feel it like that too?

I wouldn’t mind that you don’t want to
date me as much, dear, if only you
didn’t look at me as if I was
plagued or some kind of a monstruous
beast who threatens to devour you.
Do you still hate me so much that you
can’t even face me, let alone talk
casually, without you in a sulk?
What are you afraid of that I’d do
to you? You know that I promised to
never harass you again. And you
can rely that to this I’ll hold true.

What now I want the most and expect
is to be treated with due respect,
at least as much as I show to you.
Don’t cower when I encounter you,
but treat me, please, like any other
person you know. No need to pother.
I am a normal human being
and deserve an according treating.

Imagine how you would feel were you
avoided by girls you used to woo
for no sensible reason at all.
Just like me, you’d feel worthless and small.
So don’t do it to others. This game
of hide-and-seek rewards but with shame.
