I chose you

I didn’t choose you because I fell in love with you,
rather I fell in love with you because I chose you.

Only you know what reason you had
for coming to Mass so often,
maybe you were looking for something:
answers for questions, guidance, or some sign.

Maybe it wasn’t just a chance that
I noticed you right there and then
and started to take interest in
you as once possible boyfriend of mine.

I believe that a relationship,
in order to become lasting,
indeed needs to be rooted in God
as I’ve often heard in a homily.

And you seemed that the same view you keep,
that you have a bent for that thing,
since you’ve got an example too good
in your parents and wider family.

What started out as love most reasonable
soon turned into desire unstoppable.
